Atrium Chiropractic: A Center of Wellness

BY EVE MARI NUGENT

Wellness can be a state of mind or a state of being. Being well is what the Atrium Chiropractic Center is all about. There, Drs. Joseph Buckley, Damian Martinez and Raul Rodriguez help patients focus on a wellness approach to better health.

Dr. Buckley explained, "Chiropractic is the only medical profession that works with healthy people."

Dr. Rodriguez added, "We get to educate people and give them a different perspective about their health."

Dr. Martinez, president of the Dade County Chiropractic Society for two years, said, "We help people feel better from the inside out."

So what does a chiropractor do? By gently adjusting or manipulating misaligned spinal bones that could be choking nerves (called subluxations) the doctor is able to open up the nerve channel. The idea is to get pressure off the nerve. Patients can lie down or be seated for the procedure, which is quick, painless ,and 100% natural, and uses no drugs or surgery. Its purpose is to allow the body to heal itself.

Dr. Buckley noted, "We are conditioned so that if we feel pain we must be sick. Some things are not felt. Subluxations are mostly silent and can destroy you silently." He added, "Chiropractic looks for the cause of the problem, not the symptoms. We don't Band-Aid our patients."

Some causes of spinal misalignments--besides those induced by traumatic accidents--could be driving fatigue, bad posture, emotional stress, poor sleep habits, substance abuse, even working at the computer. Children can also suffer from misalignments by carrying heavy book bags.

All three doctors agreed that, "Prevention is the key to good health, and it is as important to maintain your spine as to maintain your teeth," while Dr. Buckley exclaimed, "I feel lucky that I work with the most important part of the body."

The Atrium Chiropractic Center, with state of the art equipment, has been at 3900 NW 79 Avenue (The Atrium shopping center), Suite 100, for four years.

The three doctors treat people from all walks of life no matter the age. Their youngest patient was two days old and their oldest is 99 years old, an age span that is reflects Dr. Rodriquez' remark that, "regular chiropractic check-ups can save your life." They are seeing more and more children, who suffer frequent falls (as many as 5,000 by the age of six) and can be affected by things as simple as carrying schoolbooks.

The wellness approach goes beyond pain. It's about improving work, sleep, diet and relationships. It's about keeping the body tuned. Ultimately it's about an improved quality of life. One patient at the Center during this reporter's visit remarked " I woke up one day and couldn't walk straight. I came here and got good results. Chiropractic does work. I'm much improved in all aspects of my life."
At the Atrium Chiropractic Center the doctors strive to help maintain health. Dr. Buckley concluded, "I'm so concerned about my patients that I treat them as if they were family."

Most insurance companies cover chiropractic care. For more information call Atrium Chiropractic at 305 499 9968. The three doctors also have clinics at 15118 SW 72nd Street, Miami, and 17035 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines.
